If there is one thing you quickly learn about Pune’s food culture, it’s that the city's culinary scene doesn't shut down when the sun goes down. In fact, some of the best food experiences happen well after dark. From late-night tea stalls to popular dessert hubs across Kothrud, Camp, FC Road, and Dhayari, Pune's night owls know exactly where to go when late-night cravings strike.
It was around 10:00 PM on a warm evening when my friends and I decided we needed something cold to end the night. We weren't looking for standard factory-made ice cream loaded with preservatives, artificial colors, or sickly sweet syrups we wanted something fresh. That late-night craving led us straight to one of the most talked-about fruit ice cream spots in the area.
Even at 10 PM, the scene outside was unbelievable. A massive crowd had gathered, with people queuing up along the pavement, patiently waiting for their late-night scoop.

The 10 PM Scene: Night Heat and an Endless Queue
Arriving at the spot, the first thing that struck me was the sheer energy of the crowd so late in the evening. Men, women, groups of friends, and families were standing in line under the streetlights. In Pune, seeing a crowd this dense at 10 PM is usually the ultimate seal of quality.
Standing in line while the nighttime breeze barely cut through the lingering heat, I got curious. In a city brimming with dessert parlors on practically every corner, why was this specific shop so packed at an hour when most places start winding down?
I struck up a casual conversation with someone waiting next to me and asked what made this place such a hotspot. They didn't hesitate with their answer:
"They don't use synthetic fruit powders, artificial flavor extracts, or heavy chemical preservatives here. Everything is crafted directly from real, raw fruits, made fresh."
Hearing that piqued my interest, but it also triggered a healthy dose of skepticism.
Why I Was Initially Skeptical About "Raw Fruit" Ice Cream
"Real fruit" is one of the most overused buzzwords in food marketing today. More often than not, when a commercial ice cream brand claims to feature real fruit, it usually translates to a standard vanilla base mixed with a few bits of dried fruit peel or sugary fruit syrup.
Translating raw, fresh fruit into a smooth, frozen dessert without ruining the natural texture is a delicate craft:
- Water Content: Fresh fruit contains high amounts of natural moisture, which easily turns into icy, crunchy crystals when frozen if not processed correctly.
- Flavor Dilution: Heavy dairy cream and refined sugars can easily overwhelm subtle fruit notes, leaving behind a plain sugary taste instead of the actual fruit.
- Seasonal Sensitivity: Natural fruits vary in sweetness and texture depending on the batch, making consistency tough without artificial boosters.
Because of this, I kept my expectations modest as we slowly moved closer to the counter. I wanted to test their claim on a fruit that is notoriously difficult to get right in a frozen format: Custard Apple (Sitaphal).

The Sitaphal Test: One Spoon Changed Everything
When my turn finally came at the counter, ordering the Custard Apple (Sitaphal) Ice Cream was an easy decision.
Custard apple is a beloved local favorite across Maharashtra, prized for its tropical sweetness and unique, velvety pulp. However, it is a tricky fruit to work with in ice creams. Its natural flavor is subtle and aromatic rather than sharp, meaning heavy cream or excessive sugar can easily ruin the taste profile.
When the bowl was handed over, the visual difference was immediately obvious. This didn't look like an artificially colored or whipped scoop. It had a natural off-white cream tone with visible, rich fruit pulp folded directly into the bowl.
The Flavor and Texture Experience

Taking that first spoonful completely shattered my initial doubts:
- Authentic Texture: The mouthfeel wasn't airy or fluffy like cheap commercial tubs. Instead, it was dense, creamy, and carried the signature soft, slightly grainy pulp texture of a fresh, ripe custard apple.
- Balanced Sweetness: It lacked the heavy, cloying aftertaste of refined syrups. The sweetness felt authentic to the fruit itself—gentle, refreshing, and clean on the palate.
- Pure Fruit Experience: It didn't taste like "custard apple flavored" ice cream; it tasted like fresh sitaphal pulp chilled into a velvety frozen treat.
The quality was so undeniable that finishing my bowl simply wasn't enough. Right there at 10 PM, I walked straight back to the line to order a second round before we headed out.

What Makes Fresh Fruit Ice Cream Different?
After experiencing it firsthand, it became completely clear why people were willing to queue up so late at night. Traditional commercial ice creams rely heavily on artificial food dyes, synthetic flavorings, and heavy emulsifiers to guarantee long shelf life and uniform taste.
Real fruit ice cream, on the other hand, relies entirely on the natural richness of seasonal produce and simple dairy bases.
| Feature | Standard Commercial Ice Cream | Real Fruit (Sitaphal) Ice Cream |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Flavor Source | Synthetic extracts & syrups | Natural raw fruit pulp |
| Texture Profile | Uniform, airy, and smooth | Rich, velvety, with authentic fruit fibers |
| Aftertaste | Heavy sugar coating | Clean, refreshing fruit finish |
| Ingredients | Preservatives, colorants, additives | Minimal milk, fresh pulp, natural sugar |
Final Takeaways on Pune’s Late-Night Dessert Scene
If you ever find yourself out in Pune around 10 PM and spot a huge crowd waiting outside a local fruit ice cream counter, take it as your cue to join the line.
While it’s easy to assume popular local spots are just hype, my personal experience with the fresh custard apple ice cream proved that the crowd knew exactly what they were doing. Standing in line at 10 PM turned out to be the best decision of the night, and that first bite made every minute of waiting completely worth it.
Quick Tips for Foodies Exploring Pune at Night:
- Trust the Night Lines: Popular local spots in Pune often peak around 9 PM–10:30 PM; a late-night queue is almost always a sign of fresh batches.
- Go Seasonal: Always ask for seasonal specialties like Sitaphal (Custard Apple), Mango, or Tender Coconut.
- Double Up: If it's your first time, get two scoops right away you probably won't want to stand in line twice!

Ice cream sounds good. I'm glad you liked it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mary! It really hit the spot.
DeleteDear Josh, we all love ice cream, especially in childhood. I do too. But unfortunately, I haven't eaten it for many years. I cannot eat cold foods.
ReplyDeleteDear Irina, thank you! You're so right about childhood ice cream memories. I'm actually not a big fan of cold stuff myself, not for any medical reasons, but just to stay healthy, a habit I've kept right from the days I used to play football! I hope you still get to enjoy plenty of your other favorite treats instead.
DeleteOlá, caro Josh.
ReplyDeleteO sorvete tem um excelente aspeto. Deve ser delicioso.
Muito obrigado, pela visita e comentário.
Abraço e boa semana!
