Tucked away amidst the noisy traffic, buzzing scooters, and vibrant, non-stop energy of Pune’s streets, I stumbled upon a local salon with a very special full-time resident: a rescued street cat who had been taken in, cared for, and officially adopted by the salon owner and his team.

When I first walked into that salon weeks ago, I was simply expecting a routine haircut before getting on with my afternoon. Instead, I left with a warm heart and a renewed appreciation for how everyday business owners in India create small, beautiful sanctuaries of kindness right in the middle of urban chaos. However, our initial meeting wasn't exactly a instant storybook romance. Like most former street cats who have had to navigate the unpredictable realities of life on their own terms, she kept a very cautious distance.

This is the fully expanded story of that journey how a cautious, quiet salon cat named Gondu went from ignoring me on a leather barber chair to jumping right into my arms and purring her heart out.

In India, native community cats are typically domestic short-haired felines that have naturally adapted over generations to thrive in warmer tropical climates featuring lean builds, short sleek fur, and sharp environmental awareness. However, Gondu stands out immediately from the typical neighborhood cat because of her vivid tri-color coat: she is a classic Calico cat.

Understanding the Calico Coat Pattern & Feline Biology
