Why Khor Fakkan Was My Favorite Weekend Escape From Dubai

Living in Dubai is fast-paced, vibrant, and energetic. But every now and then, the high-rises and busy city life make you crave nature, quiet air, and therapeutic sound of waves hitting the shore. Whenever I needed a breather, my go-to refuge was Khor Fakkan — a coastal town located in the Emirate of Sharjah along the Gulf of Oman.

Nestled between rugged Hajar Mountains and the open sea, Khor Fakkan offers a drastic change of scenery just under an hour and a half away from Dubai. From mountain hiking trails and serene beach sunsets to historic watchtowers and modern waterfront corniche developments, escaping to Khor Fakkan always recharged my batteries.

  • Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate.

  • What to Expect: Well-marked stone steps, panoramic views of Khorfakkan port on one side, and the town on the other.

  • Pro Tip: Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the mid-day heat.

2. Unwind at KhorFakkan Beach & Corniche

Khor Fakkan Beach stretches along a crescent-shaped bay featuring soft sand, clear waters, and a newly developed corniche promenade with running tracks, palm trees, cafes, and children's play areas. It is the perfect place to sit back, watch the sunset, or take a peaceful evening walk.

Perched over 580 meters above sea level, Al Suhub Rest House (often referred to as the "Flying Saucer" due to its circular architectural design) offers 360-degree views of  Khorfakkan.

  • Highlights: Enjoy a cup of coffee inside the glass structure while taking in the high-altitude views of the Gulf of Oman and mountain terrain.

  • Night View: At night, the city lights below light up the coast, making it a spectacular photography spot.
