DJI Action Camera First Impressions: The Zoom Limitation No One Mentions

First Impressions and Setup
My first hands-on look at the compact DJI Action Camera setup right out of the box

Published by Josh Thriving And Evolving| First Impressions & Tech Reviews

When I recently picked up a DJI Action Camera, my primary goal was straightforward: capture smooth, high-quality visuals for daily life, local travel, and street content creation. Action cameras have earned a massive reputation in the tech community for their ultra-wide perspective, rugged build quality, and class-leading digital image stabilization.

However, after unboxing the camera and taking it out for a real-world test run, I stumbled upon a specific operational quirk that caught me completely off guard a functional limitation that surprisingly few mainstream reviewers mention.

1. The Big Surprise: You Cannot Zoom While Recording

Mid-Recording Framing is Locked
A closer look at the touch interface where pre-set framing levels (like 1x) must be locked in before you press record

If you are accustomed to shooting videos on a modern smartphone, you are likely used to seamless digital zooming—pinching the screen mid-recording to zoom in on a distant subject smoothly without breaking video feed.

When testing out my new DJI action camera on location, I naturally attempted to adjust the framing while filming a live scene, only to realize the interface wouldn't allow it.

The Reality: On most DJI Action camera setups, you cannot adjust the digital zoom while an active recording is in progress. You are forced to lock in your zoom level before hitting record.

How the Workaround Works

To capture a zoomed-in perspective, you must follow a rigid sequence every single time:

  1. Stop your current video recording entirely.
  2. Tap the screen to pre-set your digital zoom ratio (e.g., 1.5x or 2.0x).
  3. Press Record again to capture the new framing.

If you are trying to capture fast, spontaneous moments—like street scenes, passing wildlife, or unpredictable travel events—having to halt and restart your video just to re-frame a shot can feel like a major workflow bottleneck.

2. Why Does Action Camera Zoom Work This Way?

Understanding why action cameras operate like this helps put the limitation into context:

  • Fixed Ultra-Wide Lenses: Action cameras rely on fixed prime lenses engineered to capture expansive scenes. They do not feature motorized optical zoom glass.
  • Sensor Cropping: Digital zoom works by cropping into the sensor pixels directly rather than adjusting physical optics.
  • Processor Load: Running heavy electronic stabilization (like RockSteady / HorizonSteady) alongside real-time 4K digital cropping demands massive processing power. DJI locks mid-record zooming on many profiles to maintain camera stability and prevent thermal throttling.

3. What I Still Love About the Camera

Despite the pre-set zoom constraint, the camera delivers outstanding performance across almost every other category:

๐ŸŒŸ Unmatched Stabilization

The built-in electronic image stabilization is exceptional. Walking down busy streets or filming over uneven paths produces butter-smooth footage that looks as though it was filmed on a motorized gimbal.

๐ŸŒŸ Pocket-Sized Portability

Its ultra-compact form factor makes it discreet and effortless to carry in a pocket or mounted on a simple handgrip far less intimidating than carrying a heavy mirrorless camera setup outdoors.

๐ŸŒŸ Responsive Quick-Shot UI

The touch interface is fast, tactile, and bright enough to read clearly under direct sunlight, making quick adjustments easy when changing environments.

4. Practical Tips for Be

tter Workflow

If you own or plan to buy a DJI action camera, here are three ways to adapt your shooting style effectively:

  • Always Shoot Wide in 4K: Record everything in standard ultra-wide 4K resolution. Because 4K provides high pixel density, you can easily crop into your footage using video editing software later without noticeable quality loss.
  • Move Closer Physically: Action cameras shine when they are physically close to the subject. Rather than relying on digital zoom, walk closer when safe to do so.
  • Pre-Plan Framing: Decide whether you need an expansive landscape view or a tighter composition before pressing the shutter button.

Final Verdict: Is It Still Worth Keeping?

Yes, absolutely. The DJI Action Camera remains one of the most reliable and capable compact video tools on the market. However, going in with realistic expectations regarding its digital zoom mechanics will save you from unwanted surprises in the field.

If your primary goal is wide-angle travel video, active outdoor content, or street recording, this camera is a standout choice just remember to select your framing before pressing record!
