When people think about the United Arab Emirates, they usually picture Dubai’s futuristic skyscrapers, endless shopping malls, or vast desert dunes. But during my time living in the UAE, I discovered that some of the country's most incredible places are tucked away in the mountains, far removed from the city buzz.
I was recently going through my camera roll and came across photos from a trip I took 6 years ago to Al Rafisah Dam in Khorfakkan, Sharjah. Looking at those pictures brought back a wave of memories about how peaceful that afternoon was.

Al Rafisah Dam was originally built to collect rainwater from the surrounding mountain valleys, but over the years, the local community transformed it into a beautiful natural haven. What struck me the moment I arrived was the contrast—jagged, sun-baked mountains rising straight out of a wide, emerald-green reservoir.
Standing along the water, hearing the gentle breeze echo off the rock faces, felt completely therapeutic. It’s the kind of place where time slows down a bit.

One of my favorite memories was simply taking a quiet walk along the paved footpath that wraps along the edge of the lake. It’s an easy, flat walk (roughly 1 km), making it perfect for taking photos, watching the ducks, or just letting your thoughts wander.
2. Kayaking and Boating on the Calm Water
Watching people pedal and kayak across the reservoir adds so much life to the scene. You can rent pedal boats or kayaks at the site (usually starting around AED 45–50 for half an hour) to get out on the water and see the surrounding mountains from a totally different angle.
3. Enjoying a Quiet Cup of Tea
There is a lakeside lounge and small shop nearby where you can grab a warm Karak tea or a light snack. Sitting by the stone railing with a hot cup of tea while looking out at the water is easily one of the best ways to unwind after a drive.

Looking back at these photos six years later is a gentle reminder of how fast life moves. Our daily routines change, we move into new chapters, and our surroundings shift—yet the calm, therapeutic feeling of standing next to quiet water remains exactly the same.
Moments like this remind me why taking time out to explore nature and clear your mind is so important, no matter where in the world you happen to be.
