The Great Matcha Hunt in Pune: A Personal Review of Barista’s Matcha & Pizza Pairing

For  anyone who relies on a specific comfort food or beverage to get through the week, relocating to a new country always comes with a few unexpected scavenger hunts. Since moving to India with my wife, one of the biggest daily challenges I’ve faced is sourcing a staple from my routine: high-quality, authentic Matcha.

Having spent several years living in the UAE, grabbing a vibrant, earthy iced matcha latte was an effortless part of my day. However, because matcha isn’t in high popular demand across many Indian cafes yet, finding a spot that actually serves it can feel like a needle-in-a-haystack search. Most places simply don't carry it.

Fortunately, my hunt finally ended on a high note during a recent afternoon outing. We were thrilled to discover that Barista in Pune features a dedicated matcha selection on their menu.

(Just a quick disclaimer before diving into the details: this is a completely independent, personal review. We stumbled upon this spot on our own, fully paid for our entire order out of our own pockets, and Barista has no idea I’m writing this I'm just a genuinely relieved resident sharing a great find!)

1. The Cafe Vibe: A Welcoming Spot to Unwind

The Barista outlet we visited in Pune has a clean, contemporary aesthetic that immediately felt welcoming.

Comfort & Style: The interior features warm, ambient lighting paired with comfortable deep-blue velvet seating.

Atmosphere: It strikes a nice balance between a productive workspace and a cozy leisure environment. The rich aroma of freshly ground espresso beans hits you the moment you walk in, giving it that classic, reliable cafe feel.

2. The Beverage Test: Barista's Signature Iced Matcha

Specialty green tea requires precise preparation to avoid a powdery texture or overly bitter notes. Because we were so excited to find it, we decided to purchase two different iced variations to see how they measured up.

The Classic Iced Matcha Latte

Visual Presentation: It came out beautifully layered, featuring a chilled milk base topped with a rich, forest-green matcha pour.

Flavor Profile: Exceptionally smooth and earthy. The culinary-grade green tea flavor was the star of the show, and it wasn’t masked by excessive sugar or syrups, making it an authentic option for matcha purists.

The Mango Iced Matcha Latte

Visual Presentation: A vibrant, eye-catching three-tier drink featuring a golden mango puree base, chilled milk, and a vivid green matcha layer.

Flavor Profile: This was a highly creative, localized twist that completely caught us off guard. The natural, tropical sweetness of the mango paired incredibly well with the earthy undertones of the matcha. It is a refreshing, summery drink that perfectly bridges local fruit flavors with Japanese tea culture.

3. The Savory Counterpart: Chicken Tikka Pizza

A freshly baked, cheesy chicken tikka pizza served on a rustic round wooden platter. The pizza is topped with chunks of spiced chicken tikka, sliced red onions, and melted mozzarella cheese

To balance out the refreshing, clean flavors of our iced matchas, we also ordered a hot Chicken Tikka Pizza from their food menu.

Ingredients & Freshness: Served hot on a rustic wooden board, the pizza featured a crisp crust topped with bubbling mozzarella, smoky chunks of spiced chicken tikka, and thinly sliced red onions.

Taste Experience: The seasoning carried a robust, classic Indian spice profile. Elevating the heat with a sprinkle of oregano and chili flakes created a savory, fiery contrast that balanced the sweet, cool notes of our iced beverages perfectly.

Personal Performance & Quality Matrix

To give you an honest breakdown of whether it's worth your hard-earned money, here is our personal rating based strictly on our experience:

Matcha Beverage Quality: 5/5 (Excellent authentic flavor, premium layering, and unique menu variety)

Culinary & Food Offerings: 4/5 (Freshly baked, rich spices, and ideal portion sizes for sharing)

Ambience & Service: 4/5 (Cozy, clean, and a very relaxing environment)

Value for Money: 4/5 (Fairly priced for specialty ingredients that are genuinely hard to find locally)

Final Verdict: 4.5 / 5

If you are navigating the cafe landscape in Pune and have been struggling to find a reliable matcha fix, Barista is an absolute must-visit. From the traditional preparation of their classic iced latte to innovative flavor profiles like the mango fusion, they completely satisfied a craving I'd been chasing for months. We will definitely be back on our own dime again soon.
