The Price of Staying in Love Across Borders .

| Our first meet in dubai ,Josh and Anu |
Falling in love online is a beautiful, floaty experience. It makes you feel like you are walking on air, completely disconnected from the heavy realities of the physical world. A simple computer code can connect two souls living thousands of miles apart, bridging entirely different continents and oceans with a single click on a phone screen.
But there is a big secret that the internet does not tell you. While technology makes it incredibly easy to fall in love across borders, it tells you absolutely nothing about the heavy price you have to pay to stay in love. When international boundaries, visa rules, and expensive plane tickets stand between you and the person you love, the emotional tax is heavy.
If you haven’t read Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 yet, you might not fully understand the heavy weight I was carrying when this chapter began. I was recovering from a massive life crisis, isolated in a foreign country, trying to piece my life back together after the world flipped upside down. (If you missed those chapters, make sure to go back and read them on the blog main page so you know exactly how I ended up in that dark room).
My own love story did not start in a romantic cafe, a cozy library, or a busy social gathering. It started on a tiny, glowing mobile screen in a quiet room in the UAE. I had just finished a very long, exhausting shift at work. My body was tired, and my mind was drained from the mechanical labor.
To unwind, I was mindlessly scrolling through my Instagram feed, not really looking for anything specific. That is when I stumbled upon a comment on a random post. There was something unique about that specific comment.
The perspective, the tone, and the pure energy of those words made me stop scrolling completely. It resonated with my heart so deeply that I clicked on her profile picture, looked at her page, and took a leap of faith by sending a friend request.Little did I know, this single click would introduce me to my future wife, and start a journey of survival that would test us both to our absolute limits.
The Timeline of a Digital Spark
When you look back at how love forms online, the steps seem small, but the meaning is huge:
The Night Shift Scroll: Tired eyes looking at a phone screen. I find a single comment that stands out from the noise of the internet. This was pure serendipity.
Two Days Later:The notification pops up on my phone. My follow request is accepted. The digital door officially opens.
One Week Later: After days of waiting and thinking, the first reply is finally sent. The guard drops, and the real conversation begins.
Two days after I sent the request, she accepted it. I immediately sent her a direct message to introduce myself properly. Then, the hard part started: the waiting game. A whole week passed before she replied to me. For seven long days, my message just sat there silently in the digital cloud. I wondered if she would ever write back.
But when she finally hit send, a beautiful conversation sparked. It was a flame that simply refused to burn out.
From that single reply, a daily rhythm emerged in our lives. We talked morning, noon, and night. We discussed our daily routines, our big dreams, our deep personal values, and our secret fears.
Before we even realized what was happening, we had fallen completely and helplessly in love. We reached a major turning point where the digital world was no longer enough for us.
We couldn't wait to hold each other in the physical world. But as you know from my previous chapters, the universe loves to test a strong vision.
The Post-COVID Financial Wall: Two Sides of the Struggle
Bringing a cross-border relationship into the physical world requires resources. Unfortunately for us, our timing could not have been more difficult.
The global economy was still suffering from the devastating impact of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns. Like I shared in Chapter 2, the world was in financial ruin.
I had spent months marooned in a dark room, facing total isolation and zero income. The job market was incredibly fragile, and financial insecurity was the normal state of life for expats.
But what made this chapter of my life truly heavy was that I wasn’t the only one hurting.
My future wife(Now my wife )was fighting her own silent battle across the border. COVID-19 did not spare her either. She was facing the exact same storm dealing with the stress of having no job for a while, navigating the financial anxiety of a collapsed economy, and wondering how the future would look.
Imagine two people completely in love, both recovering from the financial wreckage of a global pandemic, both sitting with empty pockets, yet sharing a massive dream to meet in Dubai. We could not rely on wishful thinking or luck. We both struggled hard financially during this time.Every single day was a battle against empty pockets, rising expenses, and the heavy uncertainty of the job market. If you want to see the raw details of how low things got before this period, you need to read Chapter 2
The Darkest Hour: The Triple Battle of Job, Health, and Love
As the months dragged on, the heavy weight of our individual struggles began to bleed into our relationship.
This is the raw reality people never post about on social media. Right when we needed stability the most, the company I was working with in the UAE underwent a sudden change in management.
The new management structure completely altered my reality. They increased my working hours to an extreme, brutal limit. I had absolutely no days off.
It was just endless, crushing shifts day after day, week after week. I was forced to work massive amounts of overtime hours of hard labor that I never got paid for.
To be completely honest, the government of the UAE does not support this kind of labor exploitation, they have strict laws to protect workers. But bad corporate systems always find a way to manipulate the rules behind closed doors, forcing expats into corners where they cannot fight back.
This relentless, uncompensated labor quickly began to destroy my physical and mental health. I was running on empty, completely exhausted. Because of these brutal hours and the painful reality of our different time zones, finding even a single free moment to call her became almost impossible.
I found myself trapped in a terrifying, high-stakes corner. I was forced to face a brutal ultimatum:
1. Leave the job to save my health and my relationship, but instantly lose my residency visa and get kicked out of the country.
2. Continue enduring the abuse, holding onto my legal status in the UAE while praying and hoping for a better opportunity to show up.
I was fighting a losing battle on three different fronts all at once: my job, my health, and my relationship. When you are working around the clock with no rest just to keep your right to stay in a country, you don't have the energy left to protect a romance. Silence began to stretch across the distance. Misunderstandings grew out of nowhere because we couldn't connect. We reached a terrifying breaking point where we honestly wondered if the universe was telling us to give up if the mountain between us was simply too high to climb.
The Invisible Weight of Long-Distance Love
That dark phase taught us the true definition of long-distance love. People love to romanticize it with sweet countdown timers and video clips. But those videos don't talk about the profound emotional ache that hits your chest the exact moment you close your video call app. They don't show you what it feels like to suddenly find yourself staring at a completely silent, empty room after a brutal workday that has broken your health.
They don't talk about the constant, heavy background anxiety of living in two entirely different time zones. You go to sleep wondering if the other person is safe. You wake up early wondering if they are healthy, or if they are secretly struggling with life alone while you are trapped at an exhausting workspace.
The rawest part of a cross-border relationship is that your entire emotional stability is controlled by technology. A dropped Wi-Fi connection, a delayed text message because of a hectic work shift, or a misunderstood word because you cannot see their body language can trigger a massive spiral of unnecessary worry.
Because of this, we had to build an astronomical level of trust. It requires a level of faith that does not need physical presence to feel completely secure. You have to learn to read between the lines of a text message. You have to train your ears to hear the true emotion in a voice over a compressed phone call.
Shifting the Mirror to You: Is Your Vision Worth the Premium?
Now, let us shift the mirror to you, the reader. If you are currently pursuing a big dream, a new career, or a relationship that requires immense sacrifice, distance, and pain, you need to understand a major rule of life: You must pay the premium upfront. Anything in this world that is truly valuable carries an upfront cost. Most average people are simply unwilling to pay this cost.
When you choose a path in life that is not convenient or easy, the world will look at you like you are completely crazy. People around you will start asking difficult questions:
Why are you stressing yourself out for someone you met on the internet?
Why don't you find something easier, closer, and more practical?
Is it really worth all this lonely suffering and empty pockets?
But you must remember this truth: Practical paths rarely lead to extraordinary destinations. If you want a standard, average life, then you should follow standard, average advice. But if you want a love and a future that is completely unbreakable, you must be willing to navigate the complicated, expensive, and emotionally exhausting terrain of the unseen struggle.
The Thriving Takeaway
Physical distance does not destroy a relationship but internal doubt does. Because we both survived the COVID-19 employment storm separately, we knew how to survive it together. If you and your partner can learn how to communicate deeply when you have nothing but spoken words to rely on, you are building an incredible advantage. You are creating a communicative foundation that couples who see each other every single day might never achieve in a lifetime.
Do not look at the distance between you and your goals as a punishment from life. Instead, look at it as a high-level laboratory. It is a place where your personal commitment, your mental maturity, and your financial discipline are being rigorously tested.
Through hard work, unbreakable faith, and holding the line together through a massive financial and visa crisis, we beat the odds. We refused to let the exhaustion, the bad management, and the silence win. We broke through the post-COVID wall, pushed past the doubts, and finally met face-to-face in beautiful Dubai. When you finally bridge the gap and win the battle, the foundation beneath your feet will not be loose sand. It will be solid, unbreakable rock.
