Finding My Zen: The Healing Power of Water at Khadakwasla Dam

I’ve always been someone who is deeply, almost magnetically, drawn to water. Whether it’s the vast expanse of an ocean reaching toward the horizon or the calm stillness of a freshwater lake, sitting near a body of water feels like coming home.
Recently, I spent a quiet morning at Khadakwasla Dam, located just outside Pune. Standing along its shores reminded me why I actively seek out these aquatic sanctuaries whenever I need to clear my mind, reset, and find my center.
Finding Peace Amidst the Daily Commute
What struck me most about Khadakwasla Dam is its unexpected sense of tranquility. Unlike remote mountain lakes hidden deep in nature, Khadakwasla Dam sits right next to a busy main road. On any given day, you can hear the faint hum of motorcycles, cars, and buses passing by.
Yet, if you arrive early in the morning, something magical happens.
The air feels crisp and fresh, and despite the nearby traffic, the dominant sound is the gentle, echoing rhythm of the water. It carries a steady, liquid pulse that effortlessly drowns out the mechanical noise of daily life. It’s therapeutic in a way words can’t quite capture—you have to feel the resonance right in your chest.
Respecting the Environment and Staying Safe
While the water is endlessly inviting, responsible travel means respecting local rules designed for safety and environmental protection. During my visit, I made sure to enjoy the scenery from a safe distance, staying comfortably behind the designated safety markers (babul zone) set up for visitors.
Staying behind the line didn't lessen the experience at all. The view remained wide and expansive, and the ambient sound of gentle waves lapping against the shore was just as crisp. It provided the ideal vantage point to stand still, breathe deeply, and snap a few photos to capture how the morning light danced across the ripples.
The Universal Language of Water

"Water may speak in different tongues depending on the shore, but its message of peace is always the same."
Standing at Khadakwasla, my mind drifted back to two of my other favorite waterfront spots:
Ras Al Khaimah (UAE): Known for its calm, serene stretches of sand that offer a private, undisturbed escape from the fast-paced world.
Jumeirah Beach (Dubai): A coastal stretch packed with vibrant energy, where energetic waves crash against a backdrop of iconic, glittering skyscrapers.
Looking out across Khadakwasla, I realized something profound: whether it’s the salty air of the UAE coastline or the fresh breeze off a reservoir in Pune, water speaks a universal language. It acts as a timeless lullaby. No matter where you are in the world, when you sit by the water and close your eyes, that healing echo is always there to welcome you.
Practical Tips for Visiting Khadakwasla Dam
If you’re planning your own visit to Khadakwasla Dam to unwind or capture photos, here are a few tips to make the most of your trip:
Go Early in the Morning: To experience the true "Zen" atmosphere before traffic picks up and vendors arrive, plan to arrive around sunrise (between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM).
Pack Responsibly: Keep the surroundings clean by disposing of trash in designated bins or carrying it back with you.
Combine Your Trip: If you have extra time, Sinhagad Fort is just a short drive further up the road, making it easy to turn your morning visit into a full day trip.
